Regular DVD is not HD. Blu-Ray is HD. You won't notice a difference unless you have an HD TV. And even then, you might not notice the difference. Depends on how the original video is filmed and such.
So if you buy Wayne's World on Blu-Ray, for example, it's probably not going to be any different than Wayne's World on DVD. However buy a recent movie on Blu-Ray and there will be a difference between the DVD and the Blu-Ray.

So if you buy Wayne's World on Blu-Ray, for example, it's probably not going to be any different than Wayne's World on DVD. However buy a recent movie on Blu-Ray and there will be a difference between the DVD and the Blu-Ray. Um that's not 100% accurate. Any older film that's going to be available on Blu-Ray has had to be digitalized and cleaned up to meet the required specs for being allowed on Blu-Ray. I have an HD copy of TRADING PLACES that is just beautiful to watch and it's much cleaner than my old DVD. Regular DVDs are produced at around 720x480 for picture quality - this is fine if you have a 30" TV, you won't notice any pixel degradation. Now if you're like me and have a 65" TV - you put in something that's produced at 720x480 the picture gets all fuzzy and blurry. Blu-Rays are produced at the highest pixel ration - they're produced at 1920x1080. Imagine if you will trying to use a photo that's 640x480 to fit your 22" monitor and stretch it out to use as your wallpaper - the image will get all blurry and distorted. Instead put one up that's 1600x1200 and it'll be bright and clear. That's the difference w/ Blu-Ray and DVDs. Blu-Rays are produced at a much denser pixel ratio so that more image fills more of your screen, whereas standard DVDS when played on larger TVs get blurry, darker, and discolored because your TV is trying to fill in the holes where the DVD is missing pixels. That's the image clarity difference w/ Blu-Rays. The difference is STAGGERING to watch with the clarity difference, especially if you have a larger TV. The other quality difference is sound - they usually amp up the sound quality on Blu-Rays so that they've got more surround sound included in them. Blu-Rays generally have more features on the disks as well. Granted if you have a small TV or are watching the movies on a laptop, you probably won't see much of a difference. The difference comes in when you're watching them on large TVs.

That last bit about Wayne's World was based off my own personal experience with the original Terminator movie on Blu-Ray, not actually on technical specs so thanks for the correction, Erika. Terminator doesn't look all that special in Blu-Ray (at least the version I have) and probably would have looked just as good on DVD for less cash. But I only have a 32" / 720p TV. I only have a couple of Blu-Ray movies so far. I'm sure there are varying degrees of quality in the re-mastering process for older movies, just as there is for re-mastering old albums.

Luckily I get to watch my Blu-Rays on a 1080I 65" TV - so I really get to see the differences. We had for the longest time the CW wasn't coming in as HD and the viewing difference is staggering...fuzzy, dark, dark pictures. The only good thing is that if you do have a smaller TV you don't see a huge difference, however the clarity issues become obvious when your screen gets larger.
I have that Terminator Blu-Ray and I seem to recall that it didn't seem that much more exciting - but i just got the latest Skynet version so I need to check it out to see if there was any improvement made on it.
There is a difference though between standard DVDs and Blu-Rays for TSCC - it's night and day w/ the quality.

Let me know what you think of the Skynet edition. I might want to upgrade but that's an awful big price tag.... Something like TSCC that's filmed in HD with quality cinematography will definitely look significantly better on Blu-Ray. I've heard the Planet Earth series is totally worth getting and watching on Blu-Ray with a nice HD TV...supposed to be absolutely phenomenal and showcases the benefits of HD. www.amazon.com/Planet-Earth-Complete-BBC-Blu-ray/dp/B000MRAAJM

This may be a daft question, but does anyone know if the US and Canadian S2 TSCC DVD releases will be one and the same version?
The store I usually get my R1 DVDs from, is now listing their version of S2 as the Canadian release and hasn't listed any extras for it. Eek. Not sure why they'd highlight the fact that it is a Canadian version if it was exactly the same as the US one.
Any clues?

Dammit - I went and bought a set but realized when I got home that it wasn't the exclusive cover because they didn't have a version there

Don't forget to mail the receipt and proof of purchase to SavetheSCC.com I thought about it, but don't like the idea of defacing my precious Season 2 DVD cases. ;D

Apparently the POP is on the inside and SavetheSCC are going to send them to WB (although, true, WB have the sales figures)... SUFFER FOR YOUR SHOW, MAN, SUFFER.
