Thanks to Laura for finding this.... he ’short list’ Emmy ballot is out (short being relative at 120-something pages). See the ballot here! Thomas is listed on pg. 6 under ‘Best Leading Actor in a Drama Series’! Lena on 21, for ‘Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series’! Also Brian Austin Green is on the Emmy short list for “Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.” Woohoo - way to go Brian! Congratulations, too, to Summer for her 2008 SyFy Genre Award nomination! for Best Supporting Actress, TV.

It's bizarre to me that Summer never gets mentioned in any of these mainstream award handicapping stories. Do they think doing what she does is easy?

I don't know, then again the person playing the straight man almost always gets overlooked. At least Thomas got a nomination considering that he was snubbed by the Saturn awards - who knows what criteria that they go by to decide these things.

I think consideration for nomination is based on submissions by actors of clips or episodes of their work. What I don't know is if they submit it themselves, or if the show big wigs do it for them.
I have heard actors choose their own clips to send out and whomever does the voting has these clips/eps/whathaveyou that they watch so that they can vote.
But as for the Saturn Awards, who knows?
That's going to be at Universal, right? Anyone know if there's a way to get in? Like getting tickets and things?

More like not flashy enough and too scifi for Emmy voters IMO. If Summer Glau were playing an Autistic rather than a cyborg, people would be more likely to pay attention to the quality of her peformance. But if Mary McDonnell can't get nominated for BSG (or Katee Sackhoff for that matter), I figure the journos figure its not even worth discussing the possibility of getting an award for playing a terminator. I mean even Arnold could do it, right? /sarcasm The fighter/soldier, action/drama line Lena Headey straddles as Sarah is just easier for people to get their head around. It fits into the established Jennifer Garner/Gillian Anderson pattern and there's lots of Dramatic Moments that critics can use as examples. I think one of the hardest things for an actor to do is play an affectless character like Cameron - part of performance is the exchange of energy between players and having to shut that down must be extremely hard for everyone in the scene but particularly the actor playing blank.

I have to agree with you there. Summer is extremely popular amongst a lot of Scifi fans, but she's yet to be in anything mainstream enough to warrant the Emmy's attention *cue sarcasm*
And if BSG is ignored--even as one of the most recognized modern scifi shows--then Summer has little hope at the moment, unfortunately.
I have to say this though, who ever really thought that Brian Austin Green's name would show up at the Emmy's ever again? Kudos for him. I'm glad they at least acknowledged his amazing performance on TSCC.

Not to be hatin' but whoever thought Brian Austin Green could act? Just goes to show you how type-casting can affect an actor's career: I remember watching 90210 like it was gospel Sunday nights in University (when I didn't have a paper due) and, ever after, I could never see past David Silver. Good on BAG for showing his stuff and good on TSCC staff for casting him.

I'm lucky I never watched 90210 so I had zero expectations of BAG when I heard he was coming on board. All I had to go on was getting to talk to him at the Premiere and thinking that he was one of the funniest people who I'd talked to in eons

Science fiction shows rarely get actor, screenplay, directing, and drama nomination for mainstream awards. They only get nominated for technical awards like special effects and costumes. Just look at Star Trek, Babylon 5, Farscape, and Battlestar Galactica. The X-Files is pretty much the only sci-fi show that consistently go mainstream awards for screenplays, acting, directing, and even it didn't get that many awards.

I knew who he was, but I think the only thing I'd even seen him in prior to TSCC was the small, fun part he did (playing himself) in Domino. Then again, I didn't know who Lena Headey, Summer Glau or Thomas Dekker were either. So impressive that a cast that was 100% unknown to me could win me over so quickly. Really amazing performances out of everyone. More like not flashy enough and too scifi for Emmy voters IMO. If Summer Glau were playing an Autistic rather than a cyborg, people would be more likely to pay attention to the quality of her peformance. You don't know the half of how apt that comparison is. Seriously. Summer seems to have the biggest following of the cast, but she doesn't get the acting respect she deserves for pulling off cyborg so brilliantly.

Humm let's see the only thing of Lena's that I'd seen was MERLIN eons ago so that didn't count. I am a Summer fan, although she was never the reason I watched Firefly - I just loved the ensemble cast and writing. I did watch HEROES so I knew who Thomas was from that. Richard T. Jones - I saw him in THE WOOD. He uh....left a mighty fine impression from that film BTW if you've never seen it, THE WOOD is utterly adorable, probably one of my favorite AA films, it also stars Taye Diggs and Omar Epps. The cast is definitely easy on the eyes I was more a fan of TERMINATOR than of any of the individual cast members. Seeing the leaked Pilot sold me on the cast.

The "mainstream" just wont get deeper into the nuances of Summer's performance. Anyway, I knew Summer from Firefly but knew close nothing about TSCC when I first watched the leaked pilot, aside from the fact it's Terminator. And was pleasantly surprised to see Summer there and also pleasantly surprised that it wasn't some cheap way to cash in on the franchise. I didn't recognize Lena Headey as queen Gorgo from 300 until I read it on the internet. And never watched 90210.

It was because of TSCC that I've now seen Serenity and the Firefly series and also a number of Lena Headey's films. I really hope they land some Emmies.

Pro'ly not but I bet I can guess. ;D Seems to me a lot of awards, and the Emmys in particular, depend on the appearance of a difficult performance rather than the actuality. Straight man is the hardest job in comedy just like Ginger Rogers had to do everything Fred Astaire did only backwards and in heels. But for some people, if they can't see the seams in the performance, it ain't proper actin' (can you tell I'm not a method fan?). For the record, I adored Lena Headey's work as Sarah - particularly the way she could crack Sarah's facade with a gesture or a look and let her insecurity and vulnerability surface, however briefly, but I was familiar with Headey's work and I knew she was gonna be great in the role. But more even than BAG, it was Summer Glau whose performance that surprised me and won me over. Glau's got a magnificent natural charisma that made Cameron likable even for an amoral cyborg with uncertain loyalties. What impresses me is the way Cameron is not a retread of River Tam, for all their superficial similarities, but a distinct character in its (her) own right.
