He was the best Bruce Wayne to ever grace the big screen.
What else can you say? Barring anything tragic (and let's hope and pray that doesn't happen), you know he's going to deliver us the best John Connor to date (not that that would be hard to do). Furlong was suffice as Connor in T2, Nick Stahl proably had his worst acting performance in T3, and Thomas Dekker is currently (until T4 reaches the big screen) the best John Connor to date.
I could see this being Bale's best performance of all time. He's at the peak of his career and what a great time for him to reach that peak. Anything less would be a disappointment, IMO.
I have no doubts, though. You could not have picked a better John Connor.

I agree that Bale will take over the Mantle of Best Connor but I would myself put Stahl Second.
When you take into consideration the back story of his character and how it seems as if He is no more important than anyone else now. And then all of a sudden his life has a meaning again. And he has to struggle back up through the emotions and intensity that has future position brings. All those emotions and the painful rebirth of reality I think he absolutely NAILS the character.
Eddie bless his heart tried his hardest but I never once believed he was either 10...or destined to be a leader.

I'm with the two of you in regards to the previous John's. Stahl and Bale are the two that stand out for me as well. I liked Stahl's intrepretation of the jaded, not yet leader John Connor and his relutance to deal with Kate, yet, maintaining an ever growing bond with his future wife.

I don't have high hopes for christian bale. I didnt really like him in any movie I've watched, especially batman. He seems to fake it in a way where I don't really think he's badass enough as a person to play the character. John Connor is also supposed to be cool at times. Not like ARGHH I'm gonna kill you and really stiff. I think John Connor should also be badass in sort of way that arnie & even child edward furlong (the real john connor). So yea, I'm not really looking forward to this movie at all if you can tell...

Stealthgear word of advice for ya.Dont go on IMDB and slag Bale off cos you will get the crap ripped out of you.Don't get me wrong i like Bale myself and everyone is entitled to their own opinions but believe me it's not wise to slag him off on IMDB.Just a heads up if you ever decide to do it.

You're perfectly entitled to your opinion, of course. I know some people find his American accent hard to swallow, among other things. Personally, Bale's always been one of my favorite actors - I remember rooting for him to get the Batman part back when it was first announced that Nolan was taking the helm of a new series... and being absolutely blown away that he was actually cast. I think he plays a fantastic Bruce Wayne - tired and worldweary, but with a constant, simmering intensity just underneath the surface that comes out as Bats. I actually never would have cast him as John Connor myself (not that I have anyone else in mind - I just don't associate him with the character at all)... and while I know he'll play the cool badass without breaking a sweat, I'm hoping he'll still inject enough personality quirks and specificity to the character to satisfy my own fannishness. I think because John Connor is a relative icon, the inclination is to play him as more of a stoic, which I'm really hoping doesn't happen... because the John I know is far from a stoic. Keeping Kate as his wife is a good first step.

I'm excited to see Bale's portrayal of Connor. I think the main complaint with him in the Batman role was the way he seemed to be straining his voice while under the mask. I thought it was well done, a lot of people seemed it to be too much. Luckily he won't need the 'Batvoice' in this role so that should save any form of criticism in that regard.
I also agree that having Kate as his 2nd in Command is also a good step. One of my favorite parts in T3 was John and Kate locked up in Crystal Peak, having only each other as they realized that this was the turning point for them and the Future.

He should go down as the best John Connor of all time. He's basically the best actor in the industry right now and I expect nothing less than SUPERB performance from him.

About 4 months before they revealed who would be playing John Connor a friend and I casted the part ourselves.
I selected Christian Bale I just had the feeling that despite me liking him a lot for the part that he was the most likely major star to be picked.
He chose Clive Owen. It was rather telling that neither of us chose American actors.
I must say when he was announced I was not exactly quite about rubbing it in.
And when I first heard his VO in the trailer...I was sold.

He was the best Bruce Wayne to ever grace the big screen. Amen! I'm really looking forward to seeing what he'll do with the JC role. I have no doubt that he'll knock it out of the park (though I think Clive Owen would have been great too). TSCC reinvogorated my love for the franchise after T3. The only thing I liked about that movie was that John had a wife in the future...oh and the mention of future officers in his inner circle. The actor who played JC in T3 however just didn't have the physical presence (and I'm not referring to physical size) to really make me believe he was going to save anyone, let alone all of mankind. IMO Bale has that in spades.

I just went on a Christian Bale watching marathon the last few weeks. (Suddenly SOOOO stoked for T4 now.) And, like someone else said, the last thing I'd accuse Bale of is not being badass enough for the role. Listen to what the directors and other crew say about him in the commentaries/extras for Equilibrium, Rescue Dawn, The Machinist, Batman Begins and American Psycho sometime if you have way too much time on your hands. The guy is insanely intense and physical. When he says he considered trying to get into Ranger School as preparation for the role he had in Harsh Times, I believe he would actually make it through, if allowed to do it. (If you want to see how he handles being a soldier, try Harsh Times --although it's not a good movie.) It's a very different character than John Connor, but he conveys an ease with military training that I think might be relevant. And, if you're in for seeing how he can handle doing a ridiculous amount of stunts and fight scenes while not in a rubber suit (on a small budget with limited shooting time, at that), try Equilibrium.
But that's just physicality. I think he's had some really good performances. I don't think either Batman movie was his best performance, by a long shot, so I would ask anyone who has only seen those to try out some other movies. I'd recommend American Psycho, The Machinest, The Prestige, and 3:10 to Yuma.
That said, he's not a perfect actor. I hope there aren't a lot of flashbacks, because I don't think he plays younger than himself very well. And he makes occasional risky choices. Also, although I don't think it's a failing, sometimes he plays characters that are very internal and intense and not very charismatic. So, he can be overshadowed by "the other guy" (3:10 to Yuma, The Prestige, and The Dark Knight were all played against more extroverted, charismatic characters). And since I read that Sam Worthington was cast for his ability to match Bale, I wouldn't be surprised if Worthington's is the more charismatic character again.
I do think it's interesting that he was drawn to this project. He's coming off of a lot of really good movies, so it doesn't seem like he needs to take a blockbuster movie. But the one thing that seems consistant in his choices is that he likes very obsessive characters and characters that are pushed to their mental or physical breaking points. That seems pretty consistant with the John Connor I want to see in the movie.
(Still, I'm scared of McG. Please, McG, be good!)
(*Also, dang, when rereading this I feel like it should be read in American Psycho voice. "I didn't understand his early work, but now I feel he's moved into a more mainstream and pop sensibility, while remaining true to his artistic roots."[/Bateman voice] Too many Bale movies recently, I think.)

miniglik, that was an excellent job of summing up exactly why Bale is such an interesting actor to watch. There's just an intensity there that is really hard to match.
And due to that, I am very, very interested to see his take on Connor.
(and McG skeers me something fierce, even though he's said and done all the right things so far in regards to how serious he takes this movie)

I don't worry much about McG - he's come a long way since Charlie's Angels. He now executive produces both CHUCK and SUPERNATURAL - both shows are known for cohesive well written episodes that are never confusing to watch because the end product is put together so well. Having a slick style of storytelling isn't always a bad thing.
