Garret Dillahunt is such an incredibly gifted actor. It's a shame we only get to see Cromartie when he's chasing John Connor. I realize they have to limit those types of stories because it could easily turn into the coyote chasing the roadrunner.
I think it would be worthwhile to have at least one episode that profiled Cromartie during a typical day. What do Terminators do when they aren't actually killing people? Soldiers have a lot of down time, even in a war zone there's kids hanging around, civilians that need some quick help, listening to music etc.
I could see Cromartie kicking around the house. Reading newspapers (looking for any stories that might lead to the Connors), maybe interacting with people that might give him tips. Cromartie might even lend a hand to someone that needs some work done. I think it would help to personalize him a little. He has to fill his time somehow.
It makes sense that Cromartie has maintenance skills. He has to be self sufficient on missions. He can probably machine metal parts to repair his chassis, or make weapons etc. Repair cars & trucks and maybe even some carpentry skills.
I think it could also help show the contrast in Cromartie. He could be helping some neighbor install shelving and hear a news story that leads to the Connors. Immediately Cromartie would shift into soldier mode, drop everything and go after the new lead.
It would be one way to keep Cromartie involved in the story. Reminds us that he's still out there looking and waiting.

I see Cromartie in his spare time a little awkward trying to blend in. Just imagine him helping the neighbour's cat down from the tree by ripping it out and catching the cat in the flight by the neck, the cat scratching his arm and the old neighbour turning white. Or accidentally killing the newspaper delivery boy thinking he's an intruder. But without joke, a Cromartie episode would be interesting.
