I think you take a look at what the WGA actually got and weigh that against the optics of Mel Gibson striking for higher pay, then look at a way to settle a contract with dignity.

Mel's one of the few stars on the strike bandwagon. Tom Hanks, though, is on the other side. But, really, in this economy, what would happen if the media gets a picture of (millionaire) Mel Gibson and (millionaire) Rob Schneider and others picketing? Even if it's bad spin, it'll still be played as 'millionaires strike for higher pay during deep recession!' followed by layoff numbers. They'd be crucified like Mel after an anti-semitic rant. Even some of the famous (pro WGA strike) writer's blogs are now going 'dudes, it's over, take the deal and move on'. I really hope it ends soon so that the economy of SoCal can start to right the ship.

California has an 8.5% unemployment rate, one of the highest in the country. It's even higher in certain cities in Southern California. There's a massive budget deficit. Thousands of state jobs are at risk. California also got hit the hardest during the mortgage meltdown. This state is not doing well. A strike should not have even been considered.

SAG faction attempting to get lead negotiator, Doug Allen, fired. LA TimesThat situation probably won't suss itself out until this evening or tomorrow. The minority faction is attempting to filibuster the entirety of a national board meeting. We'll see whether they can get the motion to the floor or not.

Yeah, the last update on Deadline Hollywood was that the meeting was still ongoing.

And the result from the big meeting is... Nobody got fired and no date has been set to send out ballots for a strike authorization. Variety

And the result from the big meeting is... Nobody got fired and no date has been set to send out ballots for a strike authorization. VarietyIf I was the AMPTP (the producers), I'd be having big, hearty belly laughs around now. SAG is tearing itself apart. Basic guild business didn't even get done during that meeting due to the fact that it was entirely spent filibustering. 5 or 6 out of 8 work contracts have now expired under SAG's watch and they can't even get one done. By the end of the year, all 8 will be expired and employers can start imposing terms since the union is only making vague efforts in the commercials contract on top of the TV/Theatrical contract. Great job, guys!

The SAG Moderates (and supposedly a national board majority) have delivered a "written assent" to the lawyers of SAG. Written assents, when used by corporate and labor union boards are as binding as a vote at a meeting and are usually designed to handle mundane issues not worth a meeting for. A majority of signatures of a board can, on a legal document, enforce and change guild rules, up to and including firings and guild policy. The written assent that was delivered today is an order to fire the National Executive Director (NED) Doug Allen, who is also head negotiator, and remove the entire negotiating committee (which is made up of Membership First -- hardliners -- holdovers). It replaces the NED and the committee and orders them back to the table with the AMPTP. This, effectively, kills any Strike chances as dead as a doornail. This is, basically, the nuclear option. It's hitting the hardliners with the biggest, meanest, nastiest thing you can. Using the written assent the board has essentially fired every one of the guild president's main allies and replaced them, and then given them orders completely contrary to what he had in place. I am certain it will be tested in court. Source: Hollywood Reporter

Dear God.
Which reminds me. I need to vote on my contract tomorrow. I should find out what they're offering us in terms of salary. Lucky for me, with deflation, it might actually cover the cost of living increase this year! Whooo (no, not really).

Yep. As nasty a political position as it gets within a union. The board is basically using written assent to bypass the guild president since he's been supporting filibusters at board meetings. Any other union and there'd be riots.
Doug Allen has announced just recently he's stepping down without a fight, so hopefully this'll move forward.
If I'm the AMPTP I feed SAG a minor treat on their contract to make them happy to take it and let the moderates look like heroes so the hardliners are dethroned permanently.
The winners of this whole debacle? The producers. No two ways about it, they're going to laugh their way to the bank.

If I was an actor, I'd be as mad as Christian Bale at a DP. I mean, seriously, they finally get back to the negotiating table and then a lawsuit is filed to block it?
Christ, All Mighty, what do you have to do to get things finished in that town?
