On some level, I think he does pay some heed to the present, but he's truly determined to put J-Day to an end. He may end up pushing himself past certain limitations....even if it means his own death in the long run, but he wants the same thing as the Connor's.

You actually have a point there Ross, if he is too much focused on changing the future he may as well lost himself within the present.. That was well said! Just like Sarah said to John: "That's our mission. This is our life. If we stop caring about that then we're lost." But I was thinking about this and Derek really does have an important distinction from Sarah and John - this really isn't his life. He doesn't belong in 2008. Derek's only purpose for being in this time is to try to change the past so the future he comes from never happens. He's got nothing to lose. I'm not sure that explains why he doesn't care about human life, but I'm sure it's part of it.

That statement, even though Derek isn't involved in it, is really telling about how people view things in the world and the writers do.
I really think Derek is 'lost' and it's not that he doesn't care about human life (in some ways he cares very deeply) but is willing to take everything onto himself and be lost and be the villain in a way if it will save this timeline's version of Derek and Kyle from terror and hell that comes from Judgment Day.

I think Derek values human life a LOT. But the human life he cares about are the billions dead by Judgment Day, not a cop here or a guy there. He doesn't care if he has to kill 10 or 50 or 100 people because those 100 people could save BILLIONS. "Sacrifice the one for the many." That's like his lifecode or something haha

Karma! If that's not confirmation of who he is. I don't know what else is.

Well, he was catalogued in "Dungeons and Dragons." Even though the full specifics as to why have yet to be revealed thus far.

I still wonder what happened in the cave when he was prisoner. We never heard of it alter on the show and .... the music, even though I am a classic pianist, creeped me out in that scene!!!

Do you see him more like a loner or like he would fit well with the Connor clan ?

Its really questionable to say the least. He seems to be a team player at times, yet, he has his own vendetta in play. Sarah seems to be there to keep him in check and John seems to kind of keep him grounded at times. At present, it's really open to intrepretation.

His own vendetta is related to the death of Kyle ? Even if Sarah keeps him check, I feel like he could break any minute... Like he did with Andy Goode for example.

Derek's decision in regards to Andy Goode could be read as a choice for his own self-preservation. An attempt to stop J-Day from happening, based directly on what Andy told him in the future.
Was what Andy stated the reason behind Skynet? Only time will tell.
