No John was not born to stop Skynet at least not in the Present as so many people posit.
Kyle Reese KNEW that told that to Sarah.
But Sarah chose to risk it all by attempting to attack Skynet in the present...I think now she's finally realizing just how difficult that will be.
RE: Practically impossible.

I concur. John wasn't born to do anything, because fate is what we make it. On the other hand, knowing one possible fate and preparing extensively for it might just make that fate more likely. That possibility could include either delaying J-day, stopping Skynet now and/or leading some future resistence.

It doesn't have to be a matter of fate, just intent. Before he was born, or even conceived, Sarah knew what he'd be required to do. And she spent the rest of her life and almost all of his life to prepare him for that task. On top of that his birth was orchestrated by his future self.
Sarah never sat him down and offerend him the choice of becoming a doctor, lawyer, or savior of humanity. We don't know how fate will play out. writers aside. They might fail. But we do know what everyone needs John to be, what they want him to be.
This probably sounds nuts, but in a sense John might be as close as you can come to designing a person for a task. And what about Cameron saying John is ahead of schedule? Or Jesse's plot to influence him?

Not nuts, just a self-fulfilling prophecy to a ridiculous extent. He arranged his own conception and preset the conditions for his own childhood for a predictable end result. That doesn't mean J-day has to be in 1999 or that he will even survive to that day.
John is ahead of schedule for the future from which she came, not necessarily the one he's going to. Jesse's plot ironically is to change the future she came from to the one Cameron came from. It appears it's most likely to be neither. So fate is what we make it, even if self-fulfilling prophecies have influence on it.
