Thinking about Sarah's and Derek's methods and motivations reminds me of what I had hoped might happen in season 2: a battle for John's soul. Season 1 set up the kill vs don't kill thing. Sarah didn't want to kill anyone and Derek was the soldier who would "do whatever it takes to keep from watching it burn again". They backed away from that somewhat by having Derek also tell John that "it's good to keep a pure heart", but since he delivered that with a smirk about Sarah never killing, it was a mixed message anyway... Hey, it's good to keep a pure heart, but you also need to be prepared to kill people!
The night before, Derek had saved him in the alley while Sarah stood there. In the attic, John had to kill while Sarah struggled to get free. So that's twice in less than 24-hours that she didn't protect him. I think it would've been cool if, instead of (or in addition to) turning to Cameron, John had turned to Derek. We could've gotten a lot more mileage out of that than we did from Derek being all pissy that a 16-year-old wasn't as mature as 44-(36?)-year-old. Once John had blood on his hands from killing Sarkissian, I think the door was wide open for him to cross over to killer!Derek's ways.
"He's not a soldier."
"Not yet."
Take that kind of exchange, put some tension behind it and string it through a series of episodes. I know we basically got that kind of story with Sarah and Cameron, but I would've liked to have seen it play with Sarah and Derek too.
